US visa OFC biometrics appointments in India

Almost every US visa applicant in India attends two appointments, not one. The first is at a Visa Application Centre — widely called the OFC or VAC — where fingerprints and a photograph are captured and documents are submitted. The second is the interview at the consulate itself. They are booked as a linked pair, they happen on different days at different addresses, and the ordering between them is the part that most often goes wrong when someone reschedules to an earlier date.

OFC and interview are two separate visits

The Visa Application Centre handles biometrics and document intake. The consulate handles the interview. These are different buildings, frequently in different parts of the city, and they are scheduled as two appointments. Applicants who think of 'the visa appointment' as a single event are the ones who arrive at the consulate without having done biometrics, which cannot be fixed on the day.

The OFC visit normally comes first

The biometrics appointment is ordinarily scheduled ahead of the interview, because the interview depends on the biometrics having been captured. This is the single most important thing to understand before you accept an earlier interview slot: moving your interview forward is only useful if your OFC appointment still sits in front of it. An interview two days from now with an OFC appointment next week is not a workable booking.

What this means when an earlier slot opens

When you are monitoring for an earlier date and one appears, the check is not simply 'can I travel on that date'. It is 'can I complete biometrics before that date'. For applicants travelling in from another city — and a great many are, since there is no consulate in Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh or anywhere in the north-east — that can mean two separate trips or one long stay. Decide in advance what combination you can actually manage, and set your monitored date range accordingly rather than chasing the earliest date on offer.

Interview waiver applicants and the OFC

Applicants qualifying for the interview waiver route do not attend a consular interview at all, but they do still submit documents. For this group the Visa Application Centre visit is effectively the whole in-person process, and OFC submission slots are their own inventory with their own availability — separate from the interview slots that dominate most discussion of US visa waiting times.

If your biometrics are still valid

There are circumstances in which previously captured biometrics can be reused, which changes what appointments you need. Whether this applies depends on your own record and current policy rather than on a general rule, and the scheduling system will indicate what it requires for your case. Do not assume either way from someone else's recent experience — this is one of the areas where requirements have changed more than once.

Frequently asked questions

What is the OFC appointment for a US visa?
It is the Visa Application Centre appointment where your fingerprints and photograph are captured and your documents are submitted. It is separate from, and normally before, your consular interview.
Is the OFC appointment the same as the visa interview?
No. They are two different appointments, on different days, at different locations. The OFC handles biometrics and documents; the consulate handles the interview.
Does the OFC appointment come before or after the interview?
Ordinarily before, because the interview depends on biometrics having been captured. This matters when rescheduling: an earlier interview is only usable if your OFC visit still falls in front of it.
Can I reschedule only my interview and keep my OFC date?
The two are linked as a pair in the scheduling system. Before accepting an earlier interview date, confirm the biometrics appointment still precedes it — otherwise the booking is not workable.
Do dropbox applicants need an OFC appointment?
Interview-waiver applicants do not attend a consular interview, but they do submit documents at a Visa Application Centre. Those submission slots are separate inventory from interview slots.
How long does the OFC biometrics appointment take?
The visit itself is usually short — fingerprints, a photograph and document handover. Plan for travel and queueing rather than for a long appointment.
